Environment and Sustainable Development

Education and research are the University of Gothenburg’s most important contributions to sustainable development, and the University aims to become a European leader in the area. The University offers a broader range of courses and study programmes related to the environment and sustainable development than any other Swedish higher education institution, and environmental research is conducted in a large number of subject areas.

Our Research

The University of Gothenburg is well established on the world stage for climate research. When the UN climate panel IPCC published the last parts of its fifth large synthesis report on climate change, three of the main authors were professors at the University of Gothenburg: Deliang Chen, Ulf Molau and Thomas Sterner.

The Centre for Environment and Sustainability is operated jointly by the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology with an aim to promote research, education and cooperation in the area of environment and sustainable development.

The Centre initiates, carries out, administers and supports multidisciplinary projects and initiatives within environment and sustainable development.

Our Study Programmes

The University of Gothenburg offers a wide range of courses and study programmes related to environment and sustainable development – covering everything from behavioural science and sustainable business studies to environmental education and oceanography. Our Students

The University of Gothenburg is actively working to increase student participation within sustainable development. For example, two students have been employed to support student initiatives and to participate in the efforts to increase the focus on sustainability in the education at the university.

There are many opportunities for students to get involved in the sustainability work at the University of Gothenburg. They can be a part of the internal environmental audits, contribute and speak their mind in a committee at their faculty or join a student association. Read more about the university´s work with student participation with the sustainability area and about their work at the homepage Gothenburg Students for Sustainability.

At the forefront

In 2004, the University of Gothenburg became the first university in the world to be environmentally certified under both ISO14001 and EMAS.
